Sara was brought to the U.S. from Jordan through an arranged marriage in 1998. For ten years, she was beaten brutally each time her husband caught her studying or teaching herself English. Sara’s husband told her that her only job was to cook, clean and produce children, and that she was not to study.

No More Tears placed advocacy literature in ethnic grocery stores in various languages and it was through this literature that Sara found us. When we arrived to remove Sara from her home, we found her locked in a room, where she’d been beaten for days, with large patches of hair missing. She fainted because she had not seen the sun in such a long time. Sara escaped the abuse with our help and now has a Ph.D in Pharmacy.
